Beamforming Design for Weighted Sum-Rate Maximization in MIMO Broadcast Channels

This work studies linear transmit filter design to maximize weighted sum-rate for the Multiple Input Multiple Output Broadcast Channel (MIMO-BC). In a recent result, it was shown that the derivative of mutual-information is equal to the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) for the single-user case. This paper derives a relation between weighted sum-rate and weighted sum-MMSE for the MIMO-BC by extending the aforementioned result. The derived expression for weighted sum-MMSE is then solved in an iterative manner to obtain the transmit filter that maximizes weighted sum-rate. Numerical results for sum-rate using the derived filter show that comparable or higher sum-rates can be achieved as compared to existing, more complex filter designs under different system settings.
